When graffiti culture spread from the USA to Europe in the mid-1980s, Sigi “DARE” von Koeding (born in Basel, Switzerland) quickly became one of its key pioneers. Among the first European writers, he built a network of friendships that spanned half the continent and developed a distinctive 3D style that would later transition from walls to canvases.
With his innovative approach, DARE bridged the gap between the raw back-alley spirit of graffiti and the refined world of avant-garde galleries. What once began as youthful territory-marking evolved, under his vision, into an urban art spectacle—large-scale murals, competitions, and cultural festivals.
On canvas, his simple four letters became a medium of profound expression: through layout, form, and colour, DARE conveyed insight into his own personality and artistic identity. Until his passing in 2010, he captivated entirely new audiences and challenged cultural perceptions of graffiti—transforming it from “vandalism” into respected urban art.
Even today, DARE is held in the highest esteem among his peers. In Basel, original works remain untouched after more than 25 years, a testament to his lasting impact.
Released in spring 2016, DARE to be different presents, for the very first time, a comprehensive look at DARE’s artistic legacy, showcasing his evolution from street pioneer to celebrated gallery artist. A visual journey through his multifaceted life’s work across Europe. This book is more than a monograph—it is a tribute to a true graffiti pioneer, whose style and spirit continue to inspire artists and art lovers around the world.
