While the first volume (BATES) focused on a curated selection of original painted sketches, this book takes a different approach. It traces the evolution of SMASH137's stylewriting across exactly 30 years, presenting a chronological journey through three decades of creative development, experimentation, and refinement.
Renowned not only for his iconic pieces but also for his exceptional sketches, the Swiss writer has long been celebrated for blackbook works that stand as artworks in their own right. While in recent years he has become known primarily for the studio and gallery work he creates under his civil name, Adrian Falkner, his sketch practice has lost none of that same weight – it remains every bit as vital and accomplished. This volume offers a rare and in-depth look into his creative process, showcasing the progression of his unique visual language from the earliest stages to the present day.
Throughout the book, accompanying texts capture his own thoughts on individual sketches and reflect on the periods in which they were made – adding personal context and insight to the visual journey. These are paired with photographs by Rüdiger Glatz, taken over the years and documenting the artist and his work across the decades.
